Learn-to-read with Reading Kingdom

My daughter and I just completed a 30 day trial of a learn to read program called Reading Kingdom. The program is for kids ages 4-10 and grades Kindergarten through 3rd grade. My daughter is 4 so she is just beginning to read. The program starts with an assessment test to find out where the child is already at so that it can customize the learning based on what the child needs to focus on. The program is very complex and has many levels associated with what the child has comprehended so far.

After setting up your account, there will be a parent portal so that you can register your child or children. You can refer back to this section to see how your child is progressing and what level of performance that they have achieved. My daughter is 4 years old so she started out at the lowest level of the program. It introduced her to how to form letters into words and focused on teaching her the correct sequence that the letters need to follow. It showed her what was expected of her and then gently guided her if she got the answer incorrect. The second section of the program focused on teaching her the letters and their positons on the computer keyboard so that she could type them to shoot UFOs or pop bubbles to free cute little fish. I like that it explained what section of the keyboard rows that they would be working on in that section. My daughter felt a bit rushed in the beginning because the letters were moving so fast but eventually she learned that it was ok if she missed a few. The program just kept repeating the letters that she missed so that she could remember where those common letters were located on the keyboard.

The last part is an optional part that the children aren't required to complete but I think that it added value to her total experience with the program when it was used. It lets the child pick a word and then creates a story around that word. It guides the child into making complete sentences with that keyword then walks them through an animated short story.

My daughter liked that she earned points so that when she had enough, she could move on to another level. The levels do get more and more complicated as she progresses and she can replay any of the previous sections if she wants to get some extra practice in those areas.
In just four weeks, I can tell a lot of difference in how my daughter is progressing and her keyboard skills have improved significantly.

I would absolutely recommend this program to parents with children who are learning to read or have older students who may be struggling to read at their grade level. This is a wonderful addition to a homeschooling program or for providing a boost to your child's education.
