FlareKids App for iPad

If you are like me, you worry about what exactly your kid is exposed to while watching shows on your iPad. There is an app called FlareKids that gives parents control over what their children are allowed to watch but better than that, it gives the parent the ability to decide what they can't watch. The app is currently available as a free download in the App store. You download the app and give them your email address. You are then sent an email containing a link to verify your account and authorize the app. 

It walks you through a simple setup where you can customize individual profiles if you happen to have multiple kids. The nice feature is that you can set time limits for each child which is especially great if you have smaller kids with whom you want less screen time than you would allow for older children. The parental controls are securely locked with a four digit PIN number that parents chose. The purpose is to keep the settings safe from being changed by the child.

The age range is from 3-8 years of age. The app basically lets kids watch episodes of their favorite shows from channels such as Disney, Disney Jr, Nick, PBS kids, National Geographic kids, Reading Rainbow and many more. 

It can also block access to networks you don't want the child to visit. Although the app is free, only two themes are available at no cost. There are additional themes available for purchase at a small fee.

 The more often the child uses it, the app will begin tracking their favorite shows. If they happen to exceed their time limit for the day, the app will shut down. The next time that the child returns, they can quickly find what they like watching the most. New shows are available everyday so the updated content is always fresh with many different options for the child to chose from.

Then when the child is finished with their time for the day, it has this helpful feature for parents to see what shows their kids were watching and how long they spent there during their allowed screen time. This is a nice app to have on your iPad to let the kids watch their favorite shows without having to worry about them being accidentally exposed to something inappropriate for their age. I'll be honest, some of the content in advertisements I have seen on these networks can be questionable and offensive, especially some things I have seen pertaining to a former Disney child star. I know I don't want my daughter having that as an example of how a young lady should act. For that reason, when she has T.V. time, she watches shows that I have pre-recorded and edited to be safe for her to watch. With this app, she can watch only the shows I approve for her and I can have peace of mind that she is not watching harmful materials.
